Beaches​


How could we not start this article with the beaches (or "praias" in Portuguese) of Alagoas, considered by many as the most beautiful in the world? 

From white sandy beaches fringed by limestone cliffs, palm trees and unique rock formations, to crystal clear waters ideal for swimming, diving and water sports, each haven offers a variety of options.

Praia de Ponta Verde

Le quartier le plus huppé et touristique de Maceió, la capitale d'Alagoas, s'appelle "Ponta Verde" et donne également son nom à la plage qui la borde. 

Ride the modern bike path along the beach, sit on the terrace of one of the many seaside restaurants and sip a fresh orange juice or caipirinha, or wait for low tide and walk to the iconic Ponta Verde lighthouse. There is no shortage of activities (or evening entertainment) in this part of the city!



Praia do Gunga

Considered the most beautiful beach in Alagoas, it is known for its beautiful crystal clear water and perfect waves for surfing. The quadricycle ride along the cliffs is a must!



Praia de Ipioca

Praia de Maragogi

This beach is one of the most beloved by the people of Alagoas. Surrounded by limestone cliffs and palm trees, it is an excellent place for water sports such as kitesurfing and surfing.

 


These beaches are just a few in the Alagoas region. The region is full of natural nuggets, each more beautiful than the next, offering a unique experience and breathtaking views.

Fauna and flora​

Alagoas is known for its many unique animal species, such as howler monkeys, exotic birds and sea turtles. You will most likely come across them while exploring the region's nature reserves, such as São Miguel dos Milagres, Atalaia, Marituba and Catimbau. 
 

Venture on hiking trails through the rainforests, and take boat trips to see marine animals and visit the region's secluded coves.


Music

Let's talk about music, a crucial part of the local culture, with styles such as samba, Brazilian popular music (MPB) and forró. Many music festivals are held in the region throughout the year, including the Festival de Samba de Alagoas and the Festival de Forró de Alagoas.

In June, the region celebrates São João, one of the biggest festivals in the region, which attracts visitors from all over the world to celebrate the summer solstice.

The festival takes place mainly in Maceió, the capital, and surrounding towns, and features a variety of activities, including music concerts, fireworks, street parades, water games and dance competitions. São João is famous for its traditional food, drink and music. Visitors can take part in popular parties in the city's bars and clubs, or explore the many food and drink stalls offering local specialities. All in all, São João is a joyful and colourful event that celebrates the culture and traditions of Alagoas, and offers visitors a unique and memorable experience.

History


Maceió is home to several interesting museums that offer an enriching cultural experience for visitors and are an excellent complement to water activities and relaxation on the region's beaches.

The Theo Brandão Museum of Anthropology and Folklore (MTB) is a museum that focuses on local popular culture. It exhibits objects and artefacts related to the music, dance, customs and traditions of Alagoas, including carnival masks, musical instruments and traditional costumes. For those interested in history and geography, the Museum of the Historical and Geographical Institute of Alagoas offers various exhibits on different aspects of Alagoan life, such as geography, history, literature, art and culture. Finally, the Sports Museum traces the history of sports in Maceió and Brazil. It offers interactive exhibitions about local athletes, sports teams and the most important sports events in the country.

Penedo


The town of Penedo, located in the mountains of Alagoas, is known for its peaceful colonial architecture and its breathtaking views of the valley and mountains. The town offers outdoor activities such as hiking and wildlife watching. It is located near the Piranhas Canyons, which offer rafting activities in the Piranhas River, as well as the opportunity to explore the canyons on foot or by water. Penedo is also famous for its natural thermal baths, local cuisine, and friendly locals.

People and language


The people of Alagoas, known as Alagoanos, are a warm and welcoming people, always willing to help visitors and share their culture. They are proud of their food, music and traditions, and love to celebrate holidays with family and friends. The Alagoas region is known for its hospitality, which makes it an ideal place for tourists.

The Alagoanos are also very involved in the arts, music and traditions, and they regularly organise festivals, concerts and cultural events to celebrate their heritage.
